17 laps. 2 miles each lap. 34 miles total. Average speed 30 mph.
That was the final stage for the Women’s Amgen Tour of California. For the first few laps number 51, Andrea Dvorak, was crushing it. She was ahead of the pack and even glanced back to check out her lead.
I don’t know loads about cycling, but I do know that maintaining 20mph on my bike is rather winding even with the wind at my back and a slight downgrade. The fact that these riders were managing to average 30mph is crazy. Sure, their bikes probably weigh less than half of what mine does, but still!
However they manage to do it, I’m glad that I was able to get out and watch. I’m also thankful for Andrea for leading the pack so I had an easy single target to focus and track when trying to get some panning shots!
Walking back towards my apartment before heading off to a Mother’s day lunch I caught what I like to think of as a few other envious individuals admiring the speed of these cyclists.
